A pregnancy test can give you an answer in minutes. However, it only checks for one thing: a hormone in your urine. It cannot measure how far along you are, and a negative result may depend on when you tested.

Pregnancy Test & Resource Center offers free, confidential, lab-quality pregnancy testing. If you have an unexpected pregnancy or a result you’re unsure about, contact us to schedule a visit.

The Test Looks for hCG

Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, usually called hCG. After a fertilized egg implants, the developing placenta begins making this hormone. hCG then enters the bloodstream and can be found in urine.

A urine test gives a positive result when it detects enough hCG. Home tests and lab-quality urine tests both look for this hormone; neither determines the amount in your body.

A healthcare provider can also order a blood test. Some blood tests simply detect hCG, while others measure its level. That information may be useful when a provider needs to evaluate a pregnancy more closely.

Timing Can Change the Answer

The hormone does not appear immediately after sex or fertilization. Implantation has to occur first, and hCG needs time to rise.

That’s why a test taken too soon can be negative even if you are pregnant. Results are generally more reliable after the first day of a missed period. If your periods are irregular or you ovulated later than expected, it can be harder to know when that day should be.

For a home test, follow the directions and check the expiration date. Testing with your first-morning urine may make hCG easier to detect. If the result is negative but your period still hasn’t started, test again in a few days or speak with a healthcare provider.

A Positive Result Leaves Other Questions Open

A positive test tells you that hCG was detected. It does not show where the pregnancy is developing, provide measurements to estimate gestational age, or show whether cardiac activity is detectable.

An ultrasound may provide some of those details. Pregnancy Test & Resource Center offers ultrasound services; our team can explain whether you qualify and what the exam may show.
