Do You Know About the Benefits of Adoption?
Many people are afraid of adoption because they don’t understand the process. Adoption today is very different from a few decades ago. Now, an expectant woman or birth mother makes all the decisions.
What Is Adoption?
Legal adoptions permanently transfer all rights and responsibilities from the biological parents to the adoptive parents.
What Are Birth Parent’s Rights?
Here is a list of some things you are entitled to when you choose adoption for your child:
- Free adoption services – it costs you nothing when you place your child.
- The ability to select the adoptive family that raises your child.
- The opportunity to meet the couple you’ve chosen before giving birth.
- You receive a thorough explanation of the adoption process.
- Birth parents must wait five days before consenting to adoption.
- Your medical expenses are covered if you are not on Medicaid or have other health insurance.
- All your legal expenses are covered.
- The courts determine if other expenses, such as rent, transportation, food, clothing, etc. can be covered.
- You are also entitled to freedom from coercion when making your final decision.
What Are The Types of Adoption?
There are three types of adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed. The amount of contact you want with your child and their adoptive family determines your plan.
Open Adoption
You and the adoptive family you’ve chosen exchange identifying information such as full names, addresses, and phone numbers. Creating a contact agreement lets you determine how and when to contact one another. In Alabama, adoption contact agreements are legally enforceable contracts that allow for ongoing communication between birth parents and adoptive families.
Semi-Open Adoption
With a semi-open plan, you have contact with the adoptive family and your child. However, a third party handles all communication, such as the adoption agency or attorney you use. A semi-open adoption is also known as a mediated adoption. It provides greater privacy for all parties.
Closed Adoption
The birth parents and the adoptive couple have no contact with one another. When the adoption is finalized, the courts seal the original birth certificate. This plan maintains complete privacy for everyone.
