When facing an unexpected pregnancy, many women want accurate information about their options, including possible health and safety considerations. Every medical procedure carries potential risks, and abortion is no exception. Understanding those risks can help you make an informed decision.
At Pregnancy Test & Resource Center, you can access free lab-quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound in a confidential setting. An ultrasound provides essential information about the pregnancy, including the location and gestational age. This step can help determine whether additional medical follow-up is needed before making any decisions.
Our team is here to walk with you, and you are welcome to bring a trusted partner if you would like support during your visit. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
Medical Abortion Risks
A medical abortion, often called the abortion pill, involves a two-drug regimen that ends a pregnancy through 10 weeks of gestation. The FDA approves the abortion pill within this timeframe.
While the process involves cramping and vaginal bleeding as the uterus expels the pregnancy and related tissue, there are also risks to consider:
- Incomplete abortion: The pregnancy may not fully expel from the uterus, which can lead to continued symptoms or the need for a follow-up procedure.
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding: Bleeding may be more significant than expected and may require medical attention.
- Infection: If tissue remains in the uterus or complications arise, infection may develop and require treatment.
- Ectopic pregnancy: Abortion does not treat a pregnancy located outside the uterus, which is a serious condition requiring immediate care.
Surgical Abortion Risks
Surgical abortion, performed later in pregnancy, is done in a clinical setting and involves dilation of the cervix and the use of suction or medical instruments to remove the pregnancy. Sedation or anesthesia may be commonly used. As with any procedure, there are possible risks:
- Uterine perforation: Instruments may create a tear in the uterine wall.
- Cervical injury: Dilation of the cervix can sometimes result in damage or weakening of cervical tissue.
- Scar tissue formation: Internal scarring in the uterus may affect future fertility in some cases.
- Reactions to anesthesia or sedation: Some clients may experience side effects from the drugs used during the procedure.
