A positive pregnancy test may already carry a lot of emotion. When your partner responds with anger, distance, pressure, or silence, you may feel as though you have to manage the pregnancy and the relationship at the same time.
Your partner’s reaction matters, but it does not have to be the only voice you hear. Pregnancy Test & Resource Center offers a free, confidential place to speak with a client advocate while you sort through the emotional and practical questions ahead. Schedule a visit today.
Here are several ways to process what happened, revisit the conversation, and find support beyond your partner.
Let the First Reaction Settle
Fear can come out as withdrawal, frustration, or an immediate demand to “fix” the situation. If you feel safe doing so, allow some time before returning to the conversation.
You might ask what specifically concerns your partner, then explain what you need, whether that means listening, attending an appointment, or avoiding pressure while you gather information.
A second conversation may be more productive than the first. However, you do not have to keep defending yourself if the conversation becomes cruel, threatening, or coercive.
Build Support Beyond Your Partner
One person’s response can feel enormous when no one else knows what is happening. Consider telling a trusted friend, relative, mentor, pastor, or client advocate at Pregnancy Test & Resource Center.
Be specific about what would help. You may need someone to sit with you, drive you to an appointment, discuss practical concerns, or simply listen without taking over the conversation. Emotional support may not solve the situation, but it can give you room to think without carrying everything internally.
Pay Attention to Pressure and Safety
Disagreement is different from intimidation. Threats, monitoring your phone, controlling transportation or money, forcing a pregnancy decision, or making you fear for your safety are warning signs.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers confidential assistance at 800.799.SAFE (7233), by texting START to 88788, or through online chat. Use a safe device if you believe your internet activity is being monitored.
Learn More About Your Pregnancy
Before trying to settle every question about the future, begin with what can be confirmed. Pregnancy Test & Resource Center provides free, confidential, lab-quality pregnancy testing. If your test is positive, a nurse may recommend a free, limited ultrasound.
You can also speak with one of the Center’s client advocates about your circumstances, pregnancy options, and available resources. We offer free parenting education and material assistance, including baby supplies when available.
Connect With Our Team
Pregnancy Test & Resource Center offers a free, confidential setting where you can speak openly about what you’re facing. During your appointment, a team member can listen, work with you to identify immediate needs, and explain the resources available.
